The Vømmøl Festival – Nearly 30 Years of Tradition
Verdal Sports Club organized the first festival in 1995, and it quickly became hugely popular. Today, it attracts participants from all over Norway.
Each year, the festival has a new theme inspired by the Innherred dialect. Previous themes have included: Christmas in Vømmøldalen, Sports & Mischief, Hairdressing, Reuse & Auction, Ruin Day, and Camping.
A highlight of the festival is the Vømmøl Parade, reminiscent of a carnival procession. Participants dress in costumes, ride creatively “Vømmøl-ified” vehicles, and showcase old objects. The parade starts in Verdal town center and makes its way to Folkeparken, the site of Saturday’s family event, about two kilometers away. Every year, thousands of spectators line the streets to watch.
What is Vømmøl?
In Inntrøndersk dialect, vømmøl means vadmel, a coarse woolen fabric. According to Store norske leksikon (SNL), vadmel is “a coarse cloth woven from wool,” known since the Iron Age. It has been widely used for outerwear and is a familiar fabric in Norwegian military uniforms.
During the Vømmøl Festival, vadmel is a popular material for festival attire. Nowhere else will you find so much vømmøl gathered in one place—no wonder the festival has a unique Vømmøl atmosphere!
According to SNL, vadmel has historically been used for:
Pants, Mittens, Stockings, Sweaters, Bed linens, Bags, Caulking material in boats, and more
